Amid social change and the increasing acceptance of exogamous marriage in Balinese society, the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan consistently maintain village-based endogamous marriage as a core element of their Bali Aga cultural identity. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, community figures, temple priests, and couples involved in endogamous marriages, as well as document analysis of awig-awig and customary records. The findings reveal that the persistence of endogamous marriage is driven by several key factors, including the preservation of tradition and cultural identity, adherence to customary law, the strengthening of village membership structures, and the protection of collective village resources. The process of endogamous marriage is carried out through pre-marital stages, customary rituals, and social-religious legitimation involving the wider village community. The implications of maintaining endogamous marriage include the reinforcement of social solidarity and collective identity, while also generating limitations on individual choice and potential internal kinship conflicts. This study concludes that endogamous marriage represents an adaptive cultural strategy for sustaining the continuity of traditional villages amid ongoing social change.
2025-10-31T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c)
